Amb Ali Abbas is a career diplomat and has worked in the Ministry of  Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kenya for 38 years in various capacities.

Amb Abbas started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981 as a Third Secretary in Middle East Division and was appointed Ag.Head Middle East Division from August 1982 to May 1983.He was then posted to Kenya Embassy, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from June 1983 to August 1987 as Second Secretary and Head of Chancery.

In September 1987 to August 1991 Amb Abbas was deployed in Europe and Commonwealth Division.He was subsequently appointed as Ag.Principal & Establishment Officer a position he held until September 1991 when he was posted to Kenya High Commission, Islamabad, Pakistan as First Secretary/ Head of Chancery until June,1995.

In July 1995 he was transferred to Kenya High Commission, Canberra, Australia where he worked as First Secretary until January 1998.

In January 1998, Amb Abbas was deployed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters as Principal Finance & Establishment Officer ( PF & EO ).

In April 2000 Amb Abbas was transferred to Ministry of Energy as Undersecretary ( Development).He was also appointed as Alternate Director of Ministry of Energy in Kenya Power & Lighting Company and Electricity Regulatory Authority ( ERA ).

In September 2000 he was transferred to Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he was deployed as Head/ Europe & Commonwealth Division.In March 2002 Amb Abbas was posted to Kenya High Commission in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania as Minister Counsellor.

In April 2005 he was appointed Ambassador of Kenya to the Islamic Republic of Iran where he represented Kenya until September 2010.

In September 2010 Amb Abbas was appointed Director/ Middle East Directorate. In September

2012 he also performed the duties of Secretary/ Administration at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In August 2014 Amb Abbas was appointed as Ambassador of Kenya to the State of Kuwait and was also accredited as a Non Resident Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Republic of Lebanon until October 2019 upon completion of his tour of duty  in Kuwait.

Amb Abbas graduated from University of Nairobi in 1981 with Bachelor of Arts ( Hons ) degree. In 1988 he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Economic Cooperation by Deutsche Stiftung Fur Internationale Entwicklung in West Berlin  former West Germany. In August 2013,he attended an Advanced Workshop on Diplomatic Skills for Official and Business Applications at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies at Rangsit University in Bangkok,Thailand.

Amb Ali Abbas was awarded the title of ‘Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear’ (MBS) by H.E. President Mwai Kibaki on 12th December, 2011.
